Guerin Memorial Essay Contest

Traveling Plaque
The Traveling Plaque
The Guerin Memorial Essay Contest was developed to honor Dorothy Guerin and her husband Tom Guerin. Both were very active with the Coos SWCD for a long time. Dorothy was the district's clerk and Tom was a long time director. Their contributions to conservation in this county are very much appreciated! The Guerin Memorial Essay Contest is open to all Coos County youth from 7th through 12th grades. Essays must be a minimum of 500 words, some schools may choose to make the essay an assignment.

The topics for the contest are chosen by the Coos SWCD Directors and have to do with conservation techniques pertaining to water quantity and quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and logging. The Contest usually awards three winners based on the selections from 3 to 5 judges. District staff removes all personal information from the essays so that they are presented to the judges anonymously.

The first place winner this year will receive $150 dollars cash and will have her name engraved on a traveling plaque that will stay at the Coquille High School for one year. The second place winner will receive $125 dollars, and third place winner will receive $100. All three winners will receive award certificates.

There were a total of 9 entries to the contest this year. The Coos SWCD looks forward to even more essays to read next year, so keep up the good work!
Donations to the Coos SWCD for the Guerin Memorial are also tax deductible as a contribution to a not-for-profit. A special thanks to donors for keeping this going!

* schools will be contacted late September or early October each year with that year's contest topics and guidelines.
